Macario Vitalis (1898-1989) is a Filipino painter who worked in France from the 1920s to the mid-1980s, and more particularly in Puteaux then Plestin-les-Grèves (Côtes-d’Armor) in Brittany. On January 18, 1963, the artist himself donated this painting to the Philippine Embassy in Paris. It currently holds a place of honor on display at the Official Residence of the Philippine Ambassador in Paris. In 2017, to celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and France, the Philippine Embassy collaborated with PhilPost (the Philippine Postal Corporation) and La Poste (the French postal service) to feature this specific Vitalis work alongside another painting by French artist Jacques Villon, who significantly influenced Vitalis early in his career. These two paintings were chosen as the central images for a set of commemorative postal stamps to mark the milestone. |
