Ambassador Gonzales began his DFA journey as a Clerk in 1947 and later became a Foreign Service Officer in 1960. His diplomatic career included postings in New York, London, Hongkong, Peking (now Beijing), and Berlin. He retired as the Philippine Ambassador to Poland in September 1992. In 2007, he authored his autobiography, “Autobiography of Ambassador Rafael A. Gonzales: diplomat, artist, and Judo Master,” where he chronicled his diplomatic experiences and his passion for judo, in which he achieved an 8th dan judoka. Additionally, Ambassador Gonzales explored the arts and participated in the Saturday Group Gallery exhibit at Ali Mall in 2004 with a collage titled “In Memoriam,” dedicated to his late wife, Ambassador Felicitas Benzon-Gonzales.
