Description

Kublai Millan, an artist from Davao known for fostering unity among Mindanao’s diverse spiritual cultures, donated the painting “Kalagan Musical Ensemble” to the Philippine Embassy in Canberra on June 14, 2018. The artwork celebrates the Kalagan culture, an indigenous ethnic group primarily located in southern Mindanao, Philippines.

Depicting a celebration of Kalagan culture, the painting showcases traditional dances characterized by graceful arm movements inspired by birds and other creatures. Dancers wear beaded accessories, and musicians play the kulintang and agung, traditional bronze instruments. This visual and musical tapestry highlights the Kalagan’s reverence for nature, community spirit, storytelling prowess, and unique identity within the Philippines’ cultural mosaic.
