Description

“Tanawin sa Simbahan” (Binondo Church Scene) painted by Mr. Dennis Gonzalez was donated to the Philippine Embassy in Canberra on June 12, 2018. The painting beautifully encapsulates the essence of Binondo Church situated in the historic district of Binondo, the oldest Chinatown in the world. The church’s baroque architecture dates back to the Spanish colonial era. Beyond the church’s timeless presence and red facade are the bustling streets and buildings that rose behind. Kalesas (traditional horse-drawn carriages) are driven alongside jeepneys which are a vital mode of public transportation that came from surplus military jeeps left by American forces post-World War II. The piece juxtaposes the Philippines’ rich history with modernity, capturing the fusion of tradition and progress in the nation’s cultural landscape.
