Cesar Torrente Legaspi’s (1917 – 1994) 1975 Two Men & A Lady artwork displays the notable shift in his distinctive cubist idiom by incorporating rhythmic curvilinear lines and planes contrary to the angularity of the original style. In addition, this painting also typifies the more chromatic style of his works from 1974, where layers of transparent passages create prismatic effects, figures dynamically cut through space in gestural movements, and light enhances color and form or dematerializes and dissolves them into airy transparencies, creating resonances in space. The naked human figures are depicted with a well-articulated muscular and structural frame. The play of contrasts of light and dark colors ensues between organic form and geometric structure, transparency and solidity, the flexible and the inexorable, tensions that generate the vitality of Legaspi’s arts. |
