The national hero of the Philippines, Jose P. Rizal stands not only as a revolutionary figure for his peaceful but powerful approach to demanding government reform during the Spanish colonial era, but also as a distinguished diplomat and cultural icon. Rizal is most known for penning “Noli Me Tangere” and its sequel “El Filibusterismo”, novels that were written to expose the many ills of Philippine society and the Spanish regime during that time.
This chapter features Filipino artists’ tribute to Rizal, highlighting his life and works, and enduring relevance as a symbol of Filipino pride, intellect and resilience. From acrylic paintings of artist Rene Robles and a bronze monument in Chile to a modern, colorful portrait by Celeste Lecaroz, we hope these pieces inspire generations to uphold the same values of freedom, justice and cultural heritage that Rizal\ did.
